Cubically Speaking: Little Things from a Small Office

I sit in an “office” by a lovely window on the first floor, as some of you may know. (Granted it is a mammoth assumption to assume that the ‘you’ in the prior sentence is, in fact, plural, but humor me.) The view from the window looks across a lovely concrete plaza to the Sugar House bus stop. It’s wonderful for monitoring smoke breaks for everyone in the building and reflecting on the homeless they come by in between the smoke breaks, scavenging used cigarette butts. A week or so ago, one of the older, grubbier regulars had brought a newly-minted high school drop out by to show her the best cigarette-scavenging spots. It was quite touching, in a circle-of-life kind of way.

Making this so much better is the fact that the building backs onto an urban oasis; the drainage from the Sugar House park pond flows through the open air, creek-like as it meanders through cottonwoods and half-submerged shopping carts. The drainage area has several paved and unpaved trails around it with green mesh park benches. It’s called Hidden Hollow. It’s really the perfect place to catch a glimpse of the upscale homeless. ‘Upscale homeless?’ you ask. Yes, the ones who abandoned their shopping carts in the creek for beat-up ten speeds and bungee cords. They often spend warm afternoons under the shade of the cottonwoods, talking to their other selves about the best places to scavenge cigarette butts. When I am feeling particularly generous (which is rare for a banker, regardless of the economic times), I leave my half-eaten lunch at the top of the over-flowing garbage can so they don’t have to dig as far to find it. It’s those days that give my little, little heart a warm, happy feeling that lasts until I can reject some one else’s pathetic loan request.

I love my office.

  1. I can't believe you are so callous and indifferent to the plight of your fellowmen. Your mean-spirited comments about people with no place to live; mocking their mental illnesses, drug addictions, lack of material possessions, it's sickening. I can't believe we bailed out you evil bankers!

  2. Social Conscience: it's another day for you and me in paradise.

But seriously, your voice of reason is sadly lacking in this blog and I look forward to your input on future blog posts.

  3. Well I should hope so. Though I will say, your track record is extremely poor. You have not posted a single, positive, uplifting article. Everything is sarcasm and making fun of others. Even the evening news will end its broadcast will a happy little story.

  6. You are a bigoted conservative! I have never seen such a blatant example of racial profiling! It seems some have chosen to ignore or have simply forgotten the big-picture vision promoted by Dr. King and his kin. I call on all peace-loving, freedom-loving, love-loving people everywhere to march in protest!

  7. Do not waste your time on Social Questions. What is the matter with the poor is Poverty; what is the matter with the rich is Uselessness.

  8. I think you mean moral fortitude. At least you have cultivated and classy commentators.

  9. Whatever - to both points.

  10. I feel nervous adding my low brow insights to all the high brow commentary . . . but I will anyway.

It's probably only charity if you leave a half eaten cookie or bag of chips with that sandwich.

  12. I think Lisa has something there. We call it building self efficacy in the teaching world.

  13. What, there's homeless people in my state?! That's a real shame. We should make 'em dig for their food and their homes. Better yet, they should dig themselves a home...in Nevada. Or, or, just arrest them for being homeless in my state. It's just a big ugly gay-black-illegal immigrant-female-disabled-athiest-liberal-latino-polynesian-asian-islamo-facist-Michael-Moore baby.

  14. That's it Buttars! I challenge you to a mud-wrestling, jell-o eating, foot-in-mouth, triple-crown contest. The loser has to switch to the political party of the winner or retire from public life.

Let's go make Donkeys of ourselves!

  15. You people, or in some cases, person, are all nutters. And to think that I'm in the very room of one multiple personality weirdo. . . makes you wonder about your neighbors.
